Comelec: Two bets can't assume office
CEBU, Philippines — Just five days before the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) 2023, the Commission on Elections ruled not to proclaim at least two candidates for barangay captain in Cebu Province in case they win in Monday's elections.
These two candidates for barangay captain are Eduardo Gumera of Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City, and Anthony John Apura of Barangay Valladolid, Carcar City.
The Comelec First Division ruled on October 24, 2023 to suspend their proclamation if they win for punong barangay.
Petitions for cancellation of certificate of candidacy were filed by Elstone Dabon against Gumera for being “guilty of attempt to commit child prostitution under Section 6 of Republic Act 7610,” and by Hene Fernandez against Apura for being an “accomplice to the crime of murder.”
The order, dated October 25, 2023, was signed by Presiding Commissioner Socorro Inting, and Commissioners Aimee Ferolino and Ernesto Ferdinand Maceda, Jr.
The Commission “directs the appropriate Election Officer to immediately personally serve the instant Omnibus Order to the above candidates and the appropriate Barangay Board of Canvassers (BBOC) and to monitor the implementation hereof,” stated the order.
Apura, an incumbent barangay captain for his part, clarified that he is not disqualified following rumors allegedly fabricated by the opposite camp.
“Walay ground ang Comelec mo-disqualify kanako tungod kay ang akong kaso niadtong 2001 wala pa na final and executory ug under motion for reconsideration pa sa korte,” posted Apura in his Facebook page.
Apura is calling on his supporters to maintain their solid support in his reelection bid and fight against fake news.
“Padayun ang atong laban sa Lunes Election Day, atong ipadayun ang atong causa para sa pinalangga natong Valladolid,” Apura said. — (FREEMAN)
