CEBU, Philippines - Furniture and home furnishing exporters in Cebu expect easier access and full support from the government following the appointment of Cebuano furniture designer Clayton  H. Tugonon as executive director of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM).

Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF) consultant Ruby Salutan said small and medium exporters from all over the country will be given attention, as Tugonon understands the plight of the SME players in this era of difficult and competitive global market.

Tugonon’s company Classical Geometry Export Trading is a member of CFIF.

Salutan said Cebuano exporters are elated with this development, wherein an industry insider from Cebu, is now on top of the export marketing authority in the country.

Although, there is no concrete programs and plans under the Tugonon leadership of CITEM, specifically in supporting the Cebuano furniture, fashion accessories and GDH (gifts, decors and houseware) exporters, what is certain, Salutan said is right support is on its way.

CITEM is the export marketing authority of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) that acts as catalyst in creating and managing opportunities in the global market for our clients, most specially the SMEs.

Tugonon is an award-winning furniture designer from Cebu. His company Classical Geometry is a professional exporter of world-class designed furniture.

Moreover, his company achieved several major awards and citations both for international and local award-giving bodies, known for having a sole, unique, and fearless designs.

CFIF past president Pete Delantar said one of the concerns of the furniture exporters right now, is not only the delicate or weak market, but the ability of SMEs to participate in international roadshows, which entails big investments.

Delantar hopes that with Tugonon heading the CITEM, he will be able to effectively give the support to worthy exporters who have good potential but need government backup. (FREEMAN)
