Eala begins Miami Open bid vs Italian
MANILA, Philippines -- Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala will start her climb to the main draw of the Miami Open against Italian tennister Sara Errani.
Eala, who secured a spot in the qualifiers via wild card, and Errani will face each other in the qualifying round of the Miami Open, which will happen early Monday morning (Manila time.)
However, it will be an uphill battle for the Asian Games bronze medalist, as Errani is ranked 100th in the world.
Eala is currently 176th.
The winner of their match will face the winner of the match between America’s Kayla Day, who is No. 88 in the world, and World No. 121 Emiliana Arango of Colombia in the second round of the qualifiers.
Eala is coming off an early exit from the W75 Trnava in Slovakia last week.
Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova won the Miami Open last year.
The world’s best tennisters are expected to compete in this year’s competition, headlined by Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff.
