Long-awaited UAAP volleyball crown felt like destiny for NU coach Dimaculangan
MANILA, Philippines – If you asked Karl Dimaculangan if he saw himself in the position that he was in on Tuesday — having led the NU Lady Bulldogs to their first UAAP women's volleyball title in 65 years — he wouldn't have imagined it before.
Having formerly handled the UE Lady Warriors, Dimaculangan admitted that what made leading NU to a 16-0 sweep all the more sweeter is that he never thought it would've been him at the helm.
An owner of another sweep to a UAAP volleyball crown when he captained the UST Growling Tigers en route to winning it all in Season 71, Dimaculangan said that the run with his Lady Bulldogs was just a tiny bit more special.
"Magkaiba yung pakiramdam actually," Dimaculangan said after Game Two of the Finals on Tuesday.
"Kasi unang-una, hindi ko inexpect to handle itong National University kasi, the time na sa UE lang naman ako, before kasi nun, alam ko mas maraming coaches na veteran coaches na kung pwede maghandle sakanila. Pero, they chose na ako yung mag-handle," he added.
Despite not expecting to coach the young and talent-laden Lady Bulldogs, Dimaculangan was able to fill his position well.
The Legarda-based spikers dominated the competition under his watch and did not even play a single five-setter in all their games.
In the finals, they disposed of the DLSU Lady Spikers — a known powerhouse — in straight sets in both games.
The sheer perfection of the run — and how it came to be — was simply magical for Dimaculangan.
"Parang destiny siguro. Kaya yung journey kasi going dito sa championship na ito is more emotional," he said.
