Global, Ceres seek to keep AFC Cup run
MANILA, Philippines - Global FC and Ceres Negros FC seek to sustain their good starts in the AFC Cup tonight when they go up against separate foreign rivals from their respective groups.
Global FC, which opened its campaign in Group F with a 1-0 disposal of Myanmar club Magwe at home, guns for its second straight win in an away assignment against Cambodia’s Beoungket Angkor at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
For its part, after securing a point in a road outing against Hanoi FC in Vietnam, Ceres Negros takes on Group G leader Tampines Rovers of Singapore in its first match at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod.
“Our goal is to get three points,” said Global FC coach Toshiaki Imai of their 6 p.m. duel (7 p.m. Manila time) with Beoungket, which dropped a 0-3 setback to Johor Darul Ta’zim in its opening assignment.
The People’s Club expects to play better than it did in the winning game against Magwe, where some of the players were far from top form.
“I think the players have confidence now. They can play better against Cambodia. Some players will have better fitness and the preparation will be a lot better,” said Global skipper Misagh Bahadoran, the lone goal-scorer last time.
