Southern Series dragfest unfolds at Batangas tracks

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The National Drag Racing Championship Southern Series finally kicks off today with a huge field expected to clash for top honors at the Batangas Racing Circuit Drag Strip in Rosario, Batangas.

The event was originally set last week but drag racing director Fil Gulfin and the organizers decided to postpone it due to wet track condition, giving more drivers the chance to compete in the event sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by M&H Tires, Sparco, Aguila Auto Glass and GT Radials.

Drag racing enthusiasts from Batangas, Laguna, Quezon and the Bicol region hope to dominate the Southern Series against their rivals from the North as they dispute the titles in the Quick 8, M&H Pro, Expert, Sportsman, and Hotstreet classes.

With national champion Martin Manalo of RSL Motorsports begging off this season, drivers from BRC pioneer teams Autokeeps, Just Racing, Sherwin Esguerra’s SE Racing, Jywell Comet, Team Batangas, Lowtoys, Ger&Friends and Montavita are expected to slug it out for top honors.

Multi-titled Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing and Tarlac native Arvin Jay Millet are also fancied in the event following their victories in the Northern Series kickoff last month.

Tiu ruled the Quick 8 class and still holds both the BRC Drag Strip quarter-mile record of 9.091 seconds aboard his Nissan R35 and the Philippine drag racing record of 8.806 seconds while Millet ruled the premiere M&H Pro class.

The other contenders are 2014 Northern Series champion Rommel Dural, Allan Ararao of W-Autosport, Vanni Garcia of Vannitec, Jayson Ong, Teofilo Edwin and Edison Cayco together with H3 Autoworks teammates Pepi Santos and John Kalaw.
