Liverpool, ManU clash in Singapore

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Liverpool FC and Manchester United renew their rivalry on Nov. 14 as the legends from the iconic English clubs hit the field for the “Castlewood Group Battle of the Reds 2015” at the Singapore National Stadium.

Liverpool’s all-time leading scorer Ian Rush will skipper the LFC Masters against their Manchester United counterparts led by captain Paul Parker in the 80-minute, 11-a-side extravaganza featuring the greats of the two most successful teams in England.

Rush will be joined by Jerzy Dudek, Stephane Henchoz, Steve Harkness, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Luis Garcia, Dietmar Hamann, Patrik Berger, Vladimir Smicer, Phil Babb, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Jan Kromkamp, David Thompson, Michael Thomas, and Jari Littmanen.

Nick Culkin, Russell Beardsmore, Lee Martin, Ronny Johnsen, Bojan Djordjic, Lee Sharpe, Keith Gillespie, Jesper Blomqvist, Ben Thornley, Clayton Blackmore, Quinton Fortune, Karel Poborskly, Louis Saha, George Switzer, and Andrei Kanchelskis will team up with Parker.

This will be the second time for Liverpool Masters to play in the Lion City. Last year, Fowler and company played the Singapore legends at a sold out Jalan Besar and won the rain-drenched match, 3-1.

The Reds added Garcia to their lineup this year. Garcia featured in the Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League winning team of 2005 and was instrumental in the club’s triumph in the UEFA Super Cup the same year.

Prior to the faceoff with the Red Devils, the Liverpool legends will attend a hospitality event hosted by the club’s sponsor Standard Chartered Bank for its clients across the region.

“Standard Chartered is very pleased with our sponsorship of Liverpool FC.  We have partnered with them since 2010 and have recently extended our sponsorship of the club until May 2019.  Liverpool FC is an iconic global brand with a long history and incredible following, a milestone we share with them, across Standard Chartered’s markets,” said Mai Sangalang, Standard Chartered Bank Philippines corporate affairs, brand and marketing head.

“We also share the same commitment to utilize the world’s most popular sport of football to give back to the community through our sustainability and community programs as well as to connect with our clients, partners and staff around the world through soccer clinics with Legends or opportunity to watch a Liverpool FC match,” she added.
