MANILA, Philippines —  Saludo si Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino sa katatagan ni Samantha Catantan na ika-12 miyembro ng Team Philippines na masisilayan sa Paris Olympics.

Alam ni Tolentino ang pinagdaanang pagsubok ni Catantan bago maabot ang pangarap nitong makapasok sa Paris Olympics.

Kaya naman pinuri ng POC ang panibagong tagumpay na nakamit nito.

“Samantha Catantan rose beyond adversity and proved herself deserving of an Olympic spot,” ani Tolentino.

Nakasikwat ng tiket sa Paris Games si Catantan nang masiguro nito ang gintong medalya sa wo­men’s foil sa A­sia-O­ceania Olympic Qualification Tournament  na ginaganap sa Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

“She really fought for it to the end and I’m really happy to see her success just like the other Paris-bound Filipino athletes before her,” ani Tolentino.

Hindi naging madali ang pinagdaanan ni Ca­tantan.

Kinailangan nitong ibu­hos ang kanyang naitatagong lakas sa huling sandali ng laro para maitakas ang 15-14 come-from-behind win laban kay Sofia Actayeva ng Kazakhstan sa gold medal match sa Zayed Sports Complex.

Tinalo rin ni Catantan sina Israa Al Siyabi ng Oman, 15-4, sa quarterfinal at top seed Sena Hong ng South Korea sa semis 15-3.

Si Catantan ang unang Pinoy fencer na nakapasok sa Olympics sapul noong 1992 Barcelona Games.

Pinakahuli si Walter Torres na kasalukuyan nang commissioner ng Philippine Sports Commission na nagpartisipa noong 1992 edisyon ng quadrennial meet.

“She really worked hard to put the Philippines back on the world fencing map after 32 years and we’re very proud of her,” dagdag ni Tolentino.
