On jeepney modernization

The Philippine Star

I am a senior high school student from Laguna, writing to express my deep concern regarding the Jeepney phaseouts in the Philippines. As a regular commuter and a concerned citizen, I believe that the government’s initiative towards modernizing the public transportation system should not come at the cost of completely removing the iconic jeepney from our roads.

The jeepney is not just a mode of transport, it is a part of our culture and heritage. For decades, it has been serving the people of the Philippines and is considered as the backbone of our public transportation system. While modernization is necessary, it should not be done at the expense of completely eliminating the jeepney from our roads. Instead, we can make efforts to modernize the jeepney by adhering to the basic standards for a public transport vehicle that ensures the comfort of both drivers and commuters while still maintaining the look of our classic jeepney.

It is imperative for the government to recognize the importance of supporting the livelihoods of jeepney drivers and operators in conjunction with efforts to modernize the country’s transportation system. The jeepney phaseouts have been met with resistance as it presents a significant financial burden for the affected parties. Therefore, the government must provide adequate support and assistance to drivers and operators to ensure that their welfare is not compromised.

By doing so, the government can earn the support and cooperation of these key stakeholders in the implementation of its modernization plans. It is crucial for the government to adopt a collaborative approach that balances the needs of all parties involved in the process of improving the transportation system, and the provision of support to drivers and operators is an essential component of this effort.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the drivers and operators of jeepneys are in support of modernization but not to the extent that the government is currently implementing. The lack of consultation with the stakeholders in the jeepney industry shows a disregard for their input and concerns. As a result, the ongoing phaseouts are creating significant financial difficulties for the drivers and operators who are being asked to purchase a vehicle twice or more than the price of their current jeepneys. This includes additional expenses such as fuel, maintenance, repairs and loss of income.

It is my firm belief that the government’s initiative to modernize the public transportation system should not come at the cost of the welfare of jeepney drivers and operators. The abrupt and unprofessional manner in which this program is being carried out is causing more harm than good. Instead, the government should initiate meaningful talks with the jeepney drivers and operators to progress this program for the betterment of our public transportation system, without adversely affecting them.

Therefore, I urge the government to take immediate action and cease the ongoing jeepney phaseouts until a viable solution that works for all is reached. The government should work towards modernization of the public transportation system in consultation with the jeepney drivers and operators, who are an essential part of this system.

I hope that this concern will be addressed promptly, and the necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the jeepney remains an integral part of our public transportation system. – Michael Benedict Ordenes, [email protected]
