Conserve water

The Philippine Star

Water levels in our dams all over Luzon have been dropping to critical levels due to lack of rainfall.

While urban areas, especially Metro Manila, are prioritized for water allocation at the expense of irrigation of farmlands, those of us who live in these areas must take the lead in conserving water and wisely using this resource.

How many golf courses do we have in Luzon and how much water do they consume to keep their fairways and greens green? Some courses use gray water or recycled water, but they still draw on our water resources.

Homes with swimming pools should now use all those gallons of water for their household cleaning needs. And car wash businesses should not run pressurized hoses but use buckets or pails. Their clients with fancy cars may complain, but the good of the majority takes precedence; people’s need for water is more important than having your car spotless and shiny.

We should all be conscious of the need to conserve water, not only now that we are facing the prospect of drought, but always. We must all use resources – water, power, food – wisely and responsibly, today and everyday. Marlyn Acosta-Cruz, Parañaque
