Postscript to the last elections in the Second District

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B Jimenez - The Freeman

The last polls demonstrated that Willy Caminero is invincible in the district, and that the man who can defeat him has not yet been born. But it also showed that he couldn’t make Magpale win over Gwen Garcia. The last elections also showed that Junjun is loved and highly respected in the district, but he couldn’t carry Magpale to victory in his home district.

Well, in politics you win some and lose others. As predicted, Caminero, the man of the masses, well-loved and highly respected won by 17,248 votes over the younger and undefeated mayor of Dalaguete, our good friend, Ronnie Cesante. Willy got a total of 66,166 votes over Ronnie's 48,131 in Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy, Boljooon, Oslob, Santander, and Samboan. Willy won in all towns except Dalaguete, the kingdom of Ronnie. Argao and Dalaguete are both first-class towns. Willy won in Argao his hometown (and mine too). Ronnie carried Dalaguete, as expected.

But Willy's brother, Dr. Stanley of NPC, incumbent mayor of Argao, feared for his strict disciplinarian ways, lost to his vice mayor Alan Sesaldo of PDP. But Dr. Stanley's vice mayor, Jessa Mier of NPC, won over my distant relative, Bootsie Birondo Almirante of PDP. Five of the councilors in Argao are NPC members and only three are PDP. Willy Caminero also failed to make Magpale win in Argao for governor and in the entire Second District. While Willy won in Argao, Alcoy, Boljoon, Oslob, Santander, and Samboan, Magpale lost to Garcia in all the towns except in Santander and Samboan. Garcia's total votes in the district was 66,971 or 57.68% while Magpale got only 49,122 or 42.31%.

The biggest winner in the second district was, as I predicted, Junjun Davide, the hometown favorite, highly esteemed, dearly beloved and heavily supported. He got 71,622 or 65.48% over Daphne Salibangon's 37,750 or 34.52%. Davide won in all towns, including Dalaguete which is controlled by PDP and headed by Ronnie Cesante, Gwen Garcia's strongest bet against Willy. Davide got 25,324 against Salimbangon's 8,970 in Argao. That means 73.84% for Davide and only 26.16% for Salimbangon. Willy got 61% of the Argao votes or 21,673 while Ronnie got 39% in Argao or 13,807. In Dalaguete, Ronnie retaliated with 18,887 or 60% to Willy's 12,558 or 40%. In Dalaguete, five councilors are aligned with Ronnie and PDP while two are with NPC and one is independent.

Willy won in Samboan with 6,669 votes to Cesante's 2,309. In Santander, Caminero got 7,120 votes while Ronnie got only 1,808. Oslob gave Willy 8,041 and Ronnie 5,567. Boljoon gave Willy 4,479 and Ronnie 2,914. In Alcoy, Caminero garnered 5,626 and Cesante 3,626. For governor, Gwen won very big in Argao with 19,101 while Magpale got only 16,225. In Dalaguete, Gwen got 19,158 and Magpale only 10,162. The Second District has six mayors affiliated with NPC and allied with Willy. Only Dalaguete is controlled by PDP and yet, Willy and his mayors were not able to carry Magpale to victory. The biggest winner indeed in the Second District is the native favorite Junjun Davide, who carries the prestige honor, and unblemished reputation of chief justice Hilario Gilbolingo Davide Jr., the chief justice from southern Cebu.

Well, perhaps Willy should start thinking of becoming the next candidate for governor of Cebu in 2022, if Peter Calderon of the Seventh District does not want to aspire for the Capitol. By that time, Ronnie can run again next elections to be opposed most probably by Tito Calderon of Samboan or Edsel Galeos of Argao. By that time, I will be cheering for Ronnie Cesante, the Second District's best hope after Willy Caminero.
