Grace to step down?

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

Thank God, the true colors of those aspiring for high national posts have been or are being revealed. Let us continue to pray to God for guidance. Let us continue to pray for God to send, in the next elections, His appointed leaders, genuine public servants to lead our country. The present survey results are now showing the effect of collective prayer and petition. With united, strong faith and collective supplication, God will surely send us His servants to lead our people and our country.

Our prayers can also include asking God to grant Grace Poe the openness to discern whether she has God's okay to run. She is basing her decision on the survey polls but let us pray she understands that more people are now questioning and even rejecting her type of leadership and politics.

The surveys still show her at the top but compared to the past, her ratings have also shown considerable decrease. People are now more aware about the kind of politics that she is advocating.

Many are now wondering if her so-called simple yet refreshing style in Congress was all calculated. As the adoptive daughter of actors, was she real or reel in her public service for the people?

Many are now more aware that she appears to be beholden to her vice presidential candidate. Together, they have not hesitated to court or accept the endorsement and funds as well of practically all traditional political parties.

Let us also pray for her to closely examine herself, whether she has the qualifications, the qualities needed to be president of this country.

May she remember that she once renounced her citizenship for our country so that she could be an American, like her husband and her children. How can someone who has consciously renounced her allegiance and loyalty to the Philippines be worthy of being the leader of this country? If she says she loves the Philippines and will be willing to die for the country, will she convince her husband and her children to change citizenship as well soon?

May she also try to discern the implications of renouncing her Filipino citizenship in favor of being an American. Unlike Leny Robredo, who, with her children, are asking, with much humility, why her, why not others for the vice presidency, let us pray that Grace Poe will have the humility to ask herself if she is the one who deserves to be president.

Let us pray that she will have the grace to step down because there are others more qualified than her, there are others who deserve to be president, especially those who have never renounced their being Filipinos, especially others who love the Philippines more than her, and those who have shown their sincere concern and honest service for our people.

May she go beyond the noisy clamor accorded to stage performers and actors and stop to silently have her moment with the Lord about His will, if He wants her to run and be president.

May she momentarily break away from the strong hold of her political handlers and allow God to have a handle on her dreams, on her goals. May she have the grace to honestly confront all the serious questions she needs to ask and answer by herself, about her decision to run for president of this country.

May she be guided and advised as well by her adoptive mother and her family to see her decision against the broader spectrum that includes God's will for her as well as their honest discernment about the leader that our people and our country need in the near future.

If Grace Poe truly allows herself to go beyond the din of orchestrated applause and clamor, to decide not to give in to traditional politics and handlers, to assess her own capacities and abilities, and more importantly, to listen and to obey God, we are sure she will muster the grace to step down and withdraw her candidacy, to allow God's appointed leaders to genuinely take our people and our country in God's designated path for all.
