ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Illegal cigarettes valued at P300 million were seized in an anti-smuggling operation that also resulted in the arrest of four suspects in Basilan on Monday night.

Members of the Naval Task Force 61 under the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) were conducting maritime security operations when they intercepted the motor vessel Jepaloy in the waters off Tongkil Island.

The team inspected the vessel and found 3,000 master cases of illegal cigarettes on board, according to WMNC chief Rear Adm. Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr.

The vessel’s four crewmembers failed to present documents for the transport of their cargo.

The vessel was escorted to the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon where an inventory of the contraband was conducted.
