MANILA, Philippines — Prompted by an alarming surge in suicide cases in Metro Manila, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian is calling for the immediate and intensified rollout of comprehensive mental health programs to protect vulnerable Filipinos.

As the country grapples with an energy crisis and skyrocketing prices of basic goods, Gatchalian said psychological support systems are more critical than ever.

Suicide cases in Metro Manila have almost tripled in the first quarter of the year, according to a report from the National Capital Region Police Office.

From Jan. 1 to March 23, police recorded 111 suicide cases, marking a drastic increase compared to the 38 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Under the 2026 national budget, P742.6 million has been allocated for the implementation of the mental health program, as mandated by the Mental Health Act, according to Gatchalian.
