Parañaque bans e-bike, e-trike on 7 major roads

MANILA, Philippines — To improve road safety, the Parañaque government will ban electric bicycles, e-tricycles and other similar mobility devices from traversing seven major roads in the city starting this month, Mayor Edwin Olivarez announced on Monday.

Olivarez said light electric vehicles (LEVs) are prohibited along Dr. A. Santos Avenue (formerly Sucat Road), Quirino Avenue, NAIA Road/MIA Road, Roxas Boulevard, West and East Service Roads and Airport Road.

“These major thoroughfares are designed for fast-moving traffic. Allowing LEVs to use these roads poses safety risks to both passengers and motorists,” Olivarez said.

The ban on LEVs along major roads is in accordance with Republic Act 4136, the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, and Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01 issued by the Department of Transportation.

Violators will face fines and their e-bikes and e-trikes maybe impounded, Olivarez said.

He said LEVs are allowed along secondary and city-controlled roads.

City hall said LEVs weighing under 50 kilos such as pedal-assist e-bikes and e-kick scooters are allowed on designated bicycle lanes.
