Kanlaon eruption causes P1.8 million damage to crops

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano caused P1.8 million in damage to agricultural crops in Negros Occidental, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reported.
In a report to Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, provincial agriculturist Dina Genzola said the eruption destroyed P1,718,947 worth of high-value commercial crops and P128,113 worth of rice as of May 16.
At least 13.57 hectares of farms in Barangays Tabao Proper, Bagumbayan, Saguabanwa and Bayabas in Valladolid and Barangays Sag-ang and Camandag in La Castellana were affected.
Kanlaon Volcano had a minor explosive eruption on May 13, with ashfall affecting more than 100 barangays in Negros Island.
The disaster councils in La Castellana town and in Bago City also reported muddy stream flows, affecting fish in the river systems.
In June and December last year, the Kanlaon eruptions caused P129 million in damage to agriculture in Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental.
