LTO setting up fast lanes for 24.7 million unregistered vehicles
MANILA, Philippines — Land Transportation Office chief Vigor Mendoza II yesterday ordered LTO regional directors and heads of district offices to set up special lanes for the registration of delinquent motor vehicle owners.
The move aims to register around 24.7 million motor vehicles with expired registration or 65 percent of the total number of vehicles, according to Mendoza.
“Those who will voluntarily register their motor vehicles would be given priority. All LTO district and extension offices should designate a fast lane for this purpose,” he said in a memorandum.
Most of the unregistered motor vehicles are motorcycles, with expired registration of at least one year.
The LTO has intensified its “no registration, no travel” policy. Apprehended motor vehicles with expired licenses face stiffer penalties, including a fine of P10,000.
Hundreds of unregistered motor vehicles have been impounded nationwide, according to the LTO.
Mendoza has ordered the implementation of a one-stop program, which is meant to bring the LTO offices, particularly the registration of delinquent motor vehicles, closer to the people.
“We are implementing programs to reach out to our clients so that they will be encouraged to register their motor vehicles. I am appealing to all motor vehicle owners with expired registration to take advantage of these programs,” he said.
