MANILA, Philippines — The city government of San Juan launched yesterday its asphalt art project, a pedestrian lane, along Pinaglabanan street to make the street safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Mayor Francis Zamora was joined by Makati Business Club executive director Coco Alcuaz, Boysen Philippines owner Justin Ongsue, master artist Emil Aldrine Alarcon and members of the city council.

The project is inspired by Bloomberg Philantrophies’ Asphalt Art initiative, wherein visual interventions are placed on roadways and pedestrian structures to improve street safety and brighten up public spaces.

One side of the pedestrian lane, which is in front of city hall and Pinaglabanan Elementary School, features heroes Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto.

“Juxtaposed to it are our modern-day heroes, the frontliners who helped us recover form the pandemic, as well as cyclists, (for whom) the project is intended,” Zamora said.
