Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Heavy rains caused by a low-pressure area inundated 37 barangays in Zamboanga peninsula on Wednesday, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) regional office reported yesterday.

OCD regional director Ramon Ochotorena said 16 barangays in Zamboanga Sibugay, seven in Zamboanga del Norte, 11 in Zamboanga del Sur and three in this city were affected by flooding.

He said landslides were also reported in three barangays in Zamboanga Sibugay. There was no reported casualty.

Ochotorena said the local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) immediately responded and conducted rescue and forced evacuation of residents in critical areas.

He said an initial 2,000 households were affected by flooding.

In Davao, the city DRRMO warned residents in flood and landslide-prone areas to be on alert amid intermittent heavy rain.

City DRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran said rescue teams are coordinating with barangay risk reduction and management councils in monitoring critical areas. – Edith Regalado
