MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government will establish additional facilities for bikers, including parking areas and hydration stations, as part of the implementation of the city’s safe transport ordinance.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mayor Joy Belmonte said the local government would continue to implement programs, such as biking, to promote an active lifestyle among residents and to reduce carbon emission.

Belmonte said an additional 81.7 kilometers of protected bike lanes in the city would be opened.

She said a pedestrian and bikers’ bridge connecting the campuses of the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and Miriam College would be constructed.

Under the QC Safe Cycling and Active Transport Ordinance of 2020, all local government offices are mandated to put up end-of-trip facilities that support bikers.

The facilities include parking areas for bicycles, shower rooms and hydration stations.

Under the ordinance, parking areas for bicycles must be established in all government offices in Quezon City as well as at MRT and LRT stations within the city.

The ordinance also requires establishments such as malls, restaurants, groceries and banks to put up bicycle racks.

Repair stations will also be constructed in public areas. Common tools such as bike pumps, hex keys and wrenches will be installed to prevent theft and vandalism.

Separate shower facilities and changing areas for different genders will be installed close to the parking areas.

The hydration area will be located near the entrances of city government buildings.
