Moreno closes filthy Divisoria sidewalk to vendors
MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday ordered Ilaya street in Divisoria cleared of vendors around the clock after they failed to keep their surroundings clean.
He issued the directive to officials of the Manila Police District and Department of Public Services after he found the street littered with sacks of trash during an inspection at around 5:30 a.m.
“Hindi ba kayo nahihiya diyan o talagang baboy din kayo sa bahay? Kailangan ko pa kayo sorpresahin? Pinaghahanapbuhay ko na nga kayo,” an angry Moreno told the vendors.
“Di ba pinapayagan natin sila sa gabi para makapagtinda? Kung ganyan lang din naman ang iiwan sa atin araw-araw, tigil na silang lahat. No vendors will be allowed 24 hours a day along Ilaya street,” he added.
The mayor clarified that the administration’s no-vendor policy along the roads stays.
Moreno said vendors remain prohibited along Recto Avenue, Solaire, J. Luna, Carriedo, Blumentritt, Pedro Gil and Padre Faura.
