LTFRB to Grab: Explain deactivation of 8,000 units

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a show cause order to ridehailing platform Grab to explain its decision to deactivate 8,000 transport network vehicle service (TNVS) units operating without  provisional permit.

LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra III said yesterday they also want Grab to answer complaints of alleged practice of not granting 20 percent discount to seniors as well as persons with disabilities and students.

In a statement, Grab public relations manager Arvi Lopez said the show cause order would give them an opportunity to discuss and address issues that have been raised in congressional hearings.

Grab Philippines president Brian Cu said the deactivation of the TNVS by June 10 would inconvenience commuters.

But he said they have no choice but to comply with the policies of the regulatory body.

To date, there are around 45,000 TNVS on Grab’s platform.

“At the end of the day, many Filipinos will suffer from this move – both the drivers and passengers. We want to avoid this from happening, but we are bound to comply with our regulator,” Cu said.

 “This is painful for us, our drivers and the passengers, but it is Grab’s duty to help the LTFRB enforce its regulations,” he added.

Cu urged new Grab drivers to apply as the LTFRB announced it would open 10,000 slots for TNVS starting on June 10.
