MRT, LRT bans bottled drinks as security precaution
MANILA, Philippines — Bottled drinks are now prohibited inside the train stations of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) to ensure the safety of commuters amid the bombings in Mindanao.
The measure seeks to prevent the entry of dangerous chemicals contained in plastic bottles that can be used as “liquid bombs,” the Department of Transportation said on Thursday.
“We encourage passengers to consume their bottled drinks before entering the train stations,” the MRT management said.
LRT officials also appealed to commuters to cooperate and remain vigilant following the bombings in Mindanao.
‘Walk for peace’
In Quezon City, a so-called solidarity walk dubbed “Lakad tungo sa kapayapaan, iwaksi ang karahasan” will be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle on Sunday.
National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Guillermo Eleazar said the activity aims to prevent a spate of violence in Mindanao from spilling over to Metro Manila.
Both Muslims and Christians will join the event, he said.
While there are no confirmed threats of terror attack in the metropolis, Eleazar urged the public to remain alert. – Romina Cabrera
