MANILA, Philippines — Aside from Mayon Volcano, Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon and Kanlaon on Negros island are being monitored by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) after showing signs of restiveness.

Volcanic quakes were recorded around Bulusan and Kanlaon in the past 24 hours, Ricardo Jalad, NDRRMC executive director and Office of Civil Defense administrator, said yesterday.

In a bulletin released last Jan. 17, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Bulusan showed “low to moderate levels of unrest with fair probability of more explosions.”

Bulusan is around 70 kilometers southeast of Mayon.

Phivolcs is monitoring the eight most active volcanoes in the country due to the movement around the Pacific Ring of Fire. These are Pinatubo at the boundaries of Zambales, Pampanga and Tarlac; Mayon in Albay, Taal in Batangas, Hibok-Hibok on Camiguin island, Bulusan and Kanlaon.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said only Mayon, Taal, Kanlaon and Bulusan are currently “exhibiting volcanic activities.”

Solidum said it is normal for the four volcanoes to become restive from time to time.
