Cimatu warns vs influence peddlers

MANILA, Philippines - Newly appointed Secretary Roy Cimatu has alerted the public against persons who solicit funds in exchange for the approval of transactions with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Cimatu said he received reports that some people claim to be his representative and ask money from those with pending applications for permits and other documents at the DENR.
He said he did not authorize anyone to engage in illegal activities.
Cimatu urged the public to report such incidents to the DENR hotline 3367 or mobile numbers 0917 8683367 and 0917 8853367.
Cimatu took over the helm of the DENR from Gina Lopez on Wednesday. He appealed for public support, saying environmental protection requires the cooperation of DENR personnel, stakeholders and the general public.
“I cannot do this alone. President Duterte cannot do this alone. We need all hands on deck,” he said. “We have to work together as a team. With teamwork, we can do so much more in accomplishing the critical responsibilities we carry on our shoulders.”
Saying he is still learning the ropes at the DENR, Cimatu vowed to be “moderate and calm” in implementing the policies of the DENR.
He said mining companies would be allowed to operate as long as they do not destroy the environment and are properly managed.
Cimatu said he would also try to gain the respect of the supporters of his predecessor.
