7 Vietnamese poachers caught off Palawan

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Seven Vietnamese poachers have been arrested by maritime authorities for catching tuna off Palawan.

Found on board the Vietnamese fishing vessel marked QNG 9462 were seven boxes, each containing 50 kilos of frozen tuna.

The arrest was made by Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Navy (PN) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) personnel some 27 nautical miles off Calungan Point last Nov. 22.

PCG Palawan district commander Enrico Efren Evangelista said a brief chase occurred as the Vietnamese tried to flee when they saw the PCG patrol boat.

Evangelista said the Vietnamese were placed under the custody of PCG and BFAR.

Charges will be filed against the fishermen for poaching and encroaching on the country’s maritime territory.
