Anti-black sand mining advocate gunned down
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines– A farmer who had joined protests against black sand mining in Cagayan was gunned down in his house in Aparri town early this week, police said.
The killing of Marlon Natividad, 44, came two months after Danilo Balao, 53, and his wife, Elena, 54, councilman and chairman of Barangay Dodan, respectively, both anti-black sand mining advocates, were waylaid in the village of Maura.
Balao was killed in the ambush while his wife survived with gunshot wounds.
Reports said four hooded men barged into Natividad’s home in Barangay Binalan and shot him before his family.
Chief Inspector Mina Domingo, Aparri police chief, said Natividad’s wife refused to give any statement to police probers.
In a statement, the left-leaning group Anakpawis condemned the killing.
Police were investigating if the twin attacks are related.
