Troops kill rebel in Compostela Valley clash

MANILA, Philippines - Troops killed a suspected member of the New People's Army (NPA) in an alleged encounter in Laak, Compostela Valley, Wednesday night.

Capt. Alberto Caber, spokesperson of the Armed Forces' Eastern Mindanao Command, said the firefight erupted in Sitio Green Hills, Barangay Bagong Silang.

Caber said they recovered a Garand rifle, improvised explosive device and four backpacks after the encounter.

He said the clash came after villagers reported to the military the extortion activities of the rebels in their area.
