Saudi gov't shoulders bloodmoney of OFW in death row

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A migrant workers' rights group on Friday said the Saudi Arabian government has shouldered the bloodmoney to spare an overseas Filipino worker from the death row.

Migrante-Middle East John Monterona said his group expects that detained OFW Rogelio Lanuza will soon be freed from his prison cell in Dammam Central Jail, Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Monterona said the Saudi government has shouldered the payment of the 2.3 million riyals blood money for Lanuza who accidentally killed a Saudi Arabian in 2000.

"We received this good news – the Saudi government shouldered the balance of the amount of blood money after Lanuza's family initially paid the 700,000 Saudi rials, most of which are from the fund raising campaign," he said.

As this developed, Migrante reiterated its call to the Philippine government to double its effort to save six other Filipinos in death row.
