Woman dies in Makati road mishap

-
A 30-year old woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after the motorcycle they were riding hit a concrete barrier along the EDSA-Buendia flyover the other night in Makati City.

Inspector Gilbert Loteria, chief of the Makati traffic operations section, identified the fatality as Lucita Sarmiento. Her husband was identified as Daniel Sarmiento, 40, elevator technician and resident of Mockingbird St., Zone 9, Barangay Rizal, Makati.

Loteria said the victims were driving along the flyover bound for EDSA aboard a Kawasaki motorcycle with plate number TK-8541 at about 8:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.

"They overtook another vehicle on the way to the EDSA ramp of the flyover but the driver (Daniel) miscalculated his speed," Loteria said.

Sarmiento apparently lost room to maneuver upon seeing the break along the flyover, investigators said. The flyover has long been a cause of confusion among motorists because of the sudden fork on the road leading to EDSA and Kalayaan Avenue.

Loteria said the motorcycle rammed the concrete barrier separating the EDSA descent and the C-5 Fort Bonifacio lane.

The victims who suffered head and body injuries were rushed to the Makati Medical Center by rescuers but Lucita died before reaching the hospital.

Her husband was declared in critical condition and remains under observation at the hospital. – Marvin Sy
