Danger zone residents alerted on ‘Glenda’

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Residents in the different barangays, especially those living near Butuanon River and Mahiga Creek, were alerted by Mandaue City officials to be vigilant from heavy rains caused by typhoon Glenda.

Mandaue City public information officer Roger Paller said Mayor Jonas Cortes has directed all barangay officials to inform the residents in their respective barangays to be vigilant.

Paller said Mayor Cortes directed all barangay captains through their barangay disaster risk and management council to help monitor the Butuanon River and Mahiga Creek.

Hundreds of informal settlers are still living beside the river and the Creek awaiting their transfer to the 6.5-hectare relocation site in Barangay Paknaan.

According to Paller, every captain knows their role during disaster and calamities.

Mandaue officials have also directed principals and head teachers of the different public elementary and high schools to coordinate with them.

The different schools in all barangays have been designated as evacuation centers during disaster and calamities.

Mayor Cortes established the Bantay Mandaue 161 in order for the residents in the city where citizens can report emergencies.

Personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development will also take charge of food and other needs of the victims during the disaster.
