Mandaue treats children to story telling

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Day Care pupils in Mandaue City were treated to a story telling activity in the City Public Library yesterday.

About twenty kids from Tipolo Day Care Center benefited from the half-day activity as other pupils from the Day Care Centers in barangays Bakilid and Maguikay will take their turn today and tomorrow.

City librarian Angelina Cagatulia said the story telling activity is part of the “79th National Book Week” carrying the local theme, “Libraries: Preservers and Promoters of Culture and Arts.”

The two story tellers yesterday included Sherry Walker-Bayer, sister of Sarah Walker-Cortes, wife of Mayor Jonas Cortes and Chastity Maraon.

Maraon, who teaches at Children’s Paradise Montessori School in Canduman Mandaue City, said these children have a very short retention span, adding story telling is an effective learning activity for them.

According to Maraon the story that she shared was about “Mimi: the Selfish Kitten” which she delivered only in five minutes. (MNS)

Mandaue to give cash to market stall owners

Displaced Mandaue City public market stall owners will soon heave a sigh of relief thanks to a proposed ordinance which will grant them P5,000 each in financial assistance.

City councilor Jimmy Lumapas, committee chairman of the city market and abattoir, authored the ordinance in a bid to help vendors recover from the devastation caused by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit the city last October 15.

The proposed ordinance was approved on first reading during a special session held yesterday morning.

The City Treasurer’s Office headed by Regal Oliva was tasked to formulate the guidelines for this ordinance within a week after its third and final reading.

Market administrator, Musoline Sulliva, said there are about 1,300 legitimate stall holders but verification is necessary after some owners surrendered their stalls to the city.

Sulliva was clearly happy with the development.

“Gamit kaayo ni sa mga vendors kay katong pagkahitabo sa linog wala dayun sila naka tinda ato,” Sulliva said. (FREEMAN)
