MANILA, Philippines — Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon yesterday welcomed the strong response to the agency’s first campus job fair at the Mapúa University, saying it exceeded expectations despite concerns over the flood corruption mess.

Dizon said he was worried that the recruitment caravan might fail to attract applicants.

“We were nervous that we might end up embarrassed and no one would apply, but here, at least at Mapúa, we exceeded our expected number of applicants,” he said during the job fair.

“This shows that our youth still have the passion and desire to serve the nation, despite all the bad things that have happened and the negative news we keep seeing,” he added.

Dizon said the recruitment drive is part of his effort to fill the Department of Public Works and Highways with “young, dynamic and idealistic” professionals in the wake of the flood control controversy.

Several Mapúa alumni and engineering board passers applied during the event, which marked the first in a series of campus job fairs for aspiring DPWH engineers.

Over 2,000 engineering positions were opened, the DPWH said.
