Over 62,000 hogs shipped to Metro Manila in 2 weeks

MANILA, Philippines — More than 62,000 live hogs have been delivered to Metro Manila in nearly two weeks, in line with the government’s effort to augment supply and stabilize prices in the country’s capital.

At the same time, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has assured the public that there is enough supply of rice in the country to keep market prices stable.

Data from the DA showed that a total of 62,257 live hogs and 345,229 kilos of carcass were delivered to Metro Manila from the regions from Feb. 8 to 20.

CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) supplied the largest number of live hogs, with 30,938 heads, accounting for 49.69 percent of the total deliveries.

This was followed by the MIMAROPA (Mindoro provinces, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) with a 12.15-percent share or 7,564 heads delivered, then Western Visayas with an 11.43-percent share or 7,117 heads.

Central Luzon and SOCCSKSARGEN in Mindanao shipped a total of 5,369 and 5,455 heads, respectively.

In addition, 2,021 heads were from the Bicol Region; 1,508 heads from Zamboanga Peninsula; 1,393 from Central Visayas; 645 from Northern Mindanao; 152 from Ilocos and 95 from Cagayan Valley.

Meanwhile, Central Luzon shipped the most number of carcasses at 314,497 kilos, accounting for 91.10 percent of the total.

This was followed by the Bicol Region with 22,722 kilos and Zamboanga Peninsula with 7,800 kilos.

In addition, 200 kilos were shipped from Northern Mindanao and 10 kilos of carcasses were shipped from Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. – Ric Sapnu
