MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Eduardo Año has ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to form tracker teams to go after hoarders who sell overpriced goods during the enhanced community quarantine amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

Año said they have received reports of businessmen hoarding rice, food and other supplies amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Now is the time we need tholepin each other, so I will form tracker teams to make sure there is no hoarding,” he told radio station dwIZ.

Año said that they have received reports from governors and mayors regarding hoarding in their areas by some businessmen.

He already tasked the PNP to coordinate with the Department of Trade and Industry in conducting spot inspections in warehouses.

He issued a stern warning against businessmen, and even rice millers, not to hoard their supplies or face the full force of the law.

“If it’s proven that you are hoarding, you will really face the consequences. Goods should be freeflowing,” he added.

On Thursday, police arrested three individuals in the cities of Caloocan and Manila for allegedly hoarding alcohol and some medical supplies and selling them at a higher price.
