Workers get double pay on Bonifacio Day

MANILA, Philippines — Double pay awaits workers who opt to work today instead of enjoying the holiday, the Department of  Labor and Employment (DOLE) said yesterday.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Bonifacio Day is a regular holiday, which means that workers who report to work are entitled to double pay.

Bello reminded employers nationwide to comply with the appropriate pay rules that the DOLE issued for regular holidays.

Under the holiday pay rule, a worker should be paid 200 percent of his regular salary for the day including cost of living allowance (COLA) for the first eight hours of work.

“If an employee works in excess of eight hours in overtime work, he or she should be paid an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate on the said day,” Bello said.

He said a worker who reports for work on a holiday that falls on his rest day should be paid an additional 30 percent on top of the 200 percent pay.

Work in excess of eight hours during a regular holiday that also falls on the workers’ rest day should be paid an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate on said day.

DOLE issued the advisory to guide employers in the payment of holiday pay today.
