Overwhelming House majority supports Martial Law in Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines - An overwhelming majority of the 294-member House of Representatives are convinced that President Duterte’s declaration of martial law in Mindanao is justified, and would let its 60-day maximum period lapse.
The House issued a resolution yesterday adopting the report of the Committee of the Whole it convened early in the day that fully supported Duterte’s move.
Resolution 1050 expressed the sentiments of the lawmakers, spearheaded by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, that Proclamation 216 is justified under the circumstances following attempts by the Islamic State-linked Maute group to take over Marawi City.
The main authors of the resolution were Alvarez, House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas and House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez. Fariñas was designated chairperson of the Committee of the Whole where administration officials briefed the lawmakers on the situation in Marawi City.
The House said “it finds no reason to revoke” the proclamation, which also suspended the writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao.
