MANILA, Philippines — While Hollywood stars Penn Badgley and Shay Mitchell are in Manila they did not miss out on the chance to try a famous Filipino dessert, the halo-halo.

In a series of Instagram stories, Filipino-Canadian actress and model Shay shared how she and co-star Penn, enjoyed the Manila Peninsula’s famous oversized halo-halo called “Halo-Halo Harana.”

This classic Filipino dessert was given a twist by this five-star hotel. Filipino historian Ambeth Ocampo said the Manila Peninsula was the first to serve the halo-halo in an oversized, custom-made bowl instead of the usual tall glass. It is worth P790.

“So this is halo-halo. It’s a Filipino dessert basically shaved ice with condensed milk. But I have never seen anything that big,” Shay told Penn as she introduces the iced-dessert.

It is Penn’s first time in the Philippines while Shay has been in the country three times now.

“So truly, I've never seen a halo-halo this big. Halo-halo means ‘mix-mix.’ Basically, this is a dessert mixed with a bunch of stuff,” Shay described the hotel’s signature halo-halo with amazement in a separate Instagram story.

Penn, on the other hand, described the dessert as having “lots of sugar.” He said his eating experience was “great.”

“It was great. I mean it has a lot of sugar… but it was nice,” Penn told the members of the press.

Aside from halo-halo, the Hollywood stars also tried out Filipino dessert and street food turon.

The two actors are currently in Manila to promote their hit Netflix original series “You” where Penn plays the lead character “Joe Goldberg” and Shay portrays “Peach Salinger.” The psychological thriller series was based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name.

During a press event on Monday morning, Penn likened his working experience with Shay to a halo-halo.

“I love working with Shay because we’re different, like the ingredients of halo-halo. Unity in diversity,” Penn said during the “In Conversation with You” event.
