Will you stay up at midnight for Tim Yap?

Leah C. Salterio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - If you’re still up after midnight, there’s a late-night show on television that can entertain you and keep you awake. The Tim Yap Show is a fast-paced program that is far from being boring or dull.

Definitely not a snooze inducer, the show brings forth ideas and information between Tim and his guests in a lively banter. It helps that Tim, more often than not, knows most of his guests or is familiar with them so the conversation is very light and engaging.

If Tim relies on an idiot board (does he have any?), it is never obvious when he talks to his guests. So it is never annoying that he reads something in front of him. He knows his intro, his script, his questions. Clearly, he studies his guests or gets to know them before the show.

Since the program airs nightly after midnight, no topic is too heavy. What program will you see the host and his guest gamely jumping up and down on the bed, of course without their shoes? The setting is very cozy and informal. Tim and his guest sit on the bed with pillows and they carry a casual yet engaging conversation.

One recent guest was Karylle, who shared her desire to do more musicals. She did West Side Story and Kitchen Musical (staged in Singapore). She auditioned for Miss Saigon but was not successful enough. She also auditioned for Cinderella and might soon join the production. But she expressed her desire to do Camelot or My Fair Lady one day.

Karylle gets to bond with her sisters Zia and Nicole. As much as possible, she spends a normal day with them. Their favorite hangout is Greenbelt in Makati. She also spends time with her mom, Zsa Zsa Padilla. Proudly, Karylle tells everyone that her lolo is international referee Carlos Padilla.

Meanwhile, Azkals team member Anton del Rosario is now the captain of Kaya Football Club. He talked about his training in football which has been going on for about 10 years now that he has also been playing for the country.

Anton has been instrumental for Filipinos to really get to know the sport. What about joining showbiz, Tim asked Anton. “Showbiz? Let’s see,” Anton said. But what excites him the most is playing (football) in front of a crowd.

Outside football, Anton said he’s just a regular guy who loves to eat. He just got recently engaged with his girlfriend (Samantha Richelle). He showed his tattoo on his left arm which illustrates this thought, “It’s not about the years in your life but the life in your years.”

Beauty queen Krista Kleiner (Binibining Pilipinas-International 2010) revealed her other side when she guested on the show. She recently released her debut album in Malaysia, where she performed with Akon and Black Eyed Peas member Taboo. She wrote or co-wrote the cuts in her 14-track album, which was released in Asia, Australia, US and Europe.

Interestingly, Krista is also a taekwondo blackbelter. “I always push myself. I want to stand out. Even as a kid, I was like that,” said Krista, who worked with Tim in her first hosting job.

Sometimes, Tim also gets to play a fun game with his guests or gives informational “Yapdates” to his viewers. Like when he guested Krista, he gave a “Yapdate” about former beauty queens who joined showbiz (like Gloria Diaz, Charlene Gonzalez, Miriam Quiambao, Bianca Manalo and Precious Lara Quigaman). He also gave a “Yapdate” about showbiz stars who won and lost in the recent mid-term elections.

Tim always ends the show and parts with this reminder, “Dapat laging good vibes para good night.”
