Abus threaten to behead another Samal hostage

Jaime Laude - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Abu Sayyaf bandits have threatened to behead another foreigner they seized from a resort on Samal Island if their ransom demand is not met.

In a video released on social media showing Canadian Robert Hall and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, the bandits said they should receive P600 million at 3 p.m. on June 13.

Another hostage, Filipina Maritess Flor, was not shown in the video.

Canadian John Ridsdel, who was taken along with the three hostages, was beheaded on April 27 after the deadline set for the payment of a P300-million ransom lapsed.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla said there is no letup in the operations to rescue the remaining kidnap victims.

“We have not stopped our operations. We will not cease until these bandits are held accountable for their actions,” Padilla said.

Five other foreigners – four Malaysians and a Dutch birdwatcher – remain in the hands of the Abu Sayyaf.

Fourteen Indonesian fishermen were earlier released after reportedly paying ransom.
