Woodpushers hand Central Visayas its 1st gold

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Lapu-Lapu City woodpushers delivered Central Visayas first gold in Day 1 of the 2019 Palarong Pambansa yesterday at the Davao City-University of the Philippines-Mindanao Sports Complex in Mintal here.

Jerish Velarde and Michael Jan Stephen Inigo gave Central Visayas its first gold via  elementary team event in chess. The two combined a total of 11 points for the top spot followed by CARAGA with 10 points, while NMRAA nabbed the bronze with nine points.


Velarde also got a silver in the elementary boys’ chess blitz event. He was already on the brink of winning, but suddenly got outsmarted at the final round, while Inigo also settled for bronze.

The secondary girls team, on the other hand, got a silver through the efforts of Danao’s Alphecca Gonzales and Dumaguete’s Sarah Olendo.

Olendo also got a bronze in the individual event.

Two other chess players, Kryztyl Badilles from the Cebu Province also got a bronze through the elementary girls’ action and Cebu City’s Duane Borgonia in the secondary boys’ division

Meanwhile,  Lapu-Lapu’s Kurt Imbert Limbaga snared a silver in the elementary boys anyo’s single weapon event of arnis.

More medals are expected to pour in with the start of the medal-rich swimming and archery today. (FREEMAN)
