The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Buoyed by the success of its maiden race last year, MAPFRE Insular in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepED) will be staging the second edition of its "Let's Run for Road Safety" on July 28 at the Sumilon Road in Cebu Business Park.

Open to all interested individuals from different sectors of the society, the event is a MAPFRE Insular initiative to encourage individuals and groups, including the youth, to directly contribute to raising awareness about the importance of road safety.

The campaign also urges everyone to do their part in being responsible drivers and road users while at the same time inviting them and the public to promote road safety to friends, family and colleagues in order to help reduce road accidents.

"Achieving this vision requires shared responsibility where everyone has a role to play in working towards safer roads," said race organizer Neil J. Ceniza in a statement.

This year’s run will also mark the culminating activity of the 'Road Safety Pledge Campaign', which was launched during the First Road Safety Run on July 1, 2012. From the onset of registration up to the program during race day.

Registration fee is pegged at P300 for the 3K and 6K categories and P500 for the 12K. Entry forms are available at RUNNR and at Fitness First, both in Ayala Center Cebu, and at the MAPFRE Insular office located inside the Insular Life Building in Cebu Business Park.

Close to P50,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners. The top finishers in the 12K battle will pocket P6,000 each, while the second and third placers will take home P4,000 and P2,000, respectively. The top three in the 6K division will get P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, while the first three runners to touch down the finish line in the 3K class will receive P1,500, P1,000 and P500.

Several activities with the unifying theme of 'Road Safety Awareness' have been lined up to spice up the run.

"We aim to make the event a fun day for the family and the community while promoting road safety. We have arranged a special Zumba session to be held during the run and a talk on traffic signs and road courtesy to be given by an LTO officer, both of which are open to the public," said Ceniza.
