For Palaro: Cities agree to push sports tourism
CEBU, Philippines — The cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu have agreed to promote sports tourism for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa 2024, 49 days from now.
It was last week when acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia met the leaders of the neighboring cities at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
“They want to help the City of Cebu in hosting the Palaro,” Garcia said last Monday.
He said Cebu City’s hosting of the Palarong Pambansa will need the involvement of the whole Cebu as an island.
Garcia however clarified that the said cities will not be directly involved in the ongoing preparations of the city for the hosting, but rather just extending help.
“Tabang, cooperation, coordination,” said Garcia.
The Palarong Pambansa is expected to draw at least 20,000 guests, composed of the athletes and their families.
“Can you imagine the potential of the tourism that it will bring not only to Cebu City but the entire Province of Cebu, so diha among coordination and cooperation kay wala pa man mi naghisgot sa mga events,” said Garcia.
He said they anticipate that the delegates will not just stay in Cebu City but will also want to visit Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.
The acting mayor said the city’s partnership with the province and the two cities is aimed at coordinating how they can create tourism packages or discounts exclusive to Palaro athletes and their companions.
“After analyzing (sa Palaro), asa man sila padung? Gusto na sila moadto og Oslob to seek the (whale) sharks. Gusto sila moadto sa Bantayan para maligo og dagat, or sa Camotes, or sa Lapu-Lapu for the beaches,” said Garcia.
He further said that the said cities want to host some of the sporting events and he is open to discussion. — (FREEMAN)
