CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City government through its market division is going after faulty weighing scales.

Market Operations Division head Robert Barquilla issued a memorandum to its monitoring and enforcement team “Operation Timbangan.

The operation started last May 30 until yesterday.

"Operation Timbangan para sa proteksyon sa atong konsumedor nagpadayon sa atong merkado publiko" Barquilla said.

Operation Timbangan involves not only those in Carbon Market but also covers the other public markets in Cebu City.

It was found out that many are still trying to alter their weighing scales, one of Mayor Michael Rama’s special assistants, Ramil Ayuman, disclosed.

“Daghang gihapon mga tikasan nga timbangan ang na embargo sukad sa niaging semana hangtod karon adlawa,” Ayuman said.

So far, there are now close to a hundred weighing scales confiscated.

MOD confiscated an average of 20 weighing scales at the time of their operation.

The Department of Trade and Industry had also long emphasized that the Consumer Act of the Philippines or Republic Act No. 7394 should be observed even in public markets.

This is inaction to protect the consumers against hazards to health and safety, and against deceptive, unfair, and unconscionable sales acts and practices accordingly.

Weighing scales are also to be calibrated regularly by authorized personnel to ensure that it is not defective or altered.

Meanwhile, the MOD is also busy with its clearing operations around the Bagsakan area.

The Bagsakan area will have the designated karomata lane later.

Aside from that, MOD is also busy clearing the other illegal structures at Carbon Market area to provide ease and comfort to costumers and visitors in the area.
