CH pays respects to former mayor

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City officials and employees have gathered to honor former mayor Mario D. Ortiz during yesterday’s necrological services held at the city’s Social Hall.

Ortiz, who suffered from a heart failure, died at the age of 93 at his house in Beverly Hills, Barangay Lahug last Friday morning. His five children, grandchildren and relatives were around during the necrological services.

The memorial service started with a mass celebrated by Rev. Fr. Glad Neri, followed by a band performed by the Philippine National Police.

Vice Mayor Edgar Labella in his eulogy extended his condolences to the family of Ortiz and revered the former mayor for his services to the city.

According to Labella, Ortiz earned his highest respect and he considers him as his model in public service. “He is an epitome of humility, a true and dedicated public servant,” said Labella.

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy, a great friend of Ortiz, shared how he looks up to the late mayor as a public servant as well as on how Ortiz handled his family, including his marriage life.

Sitoy said he was inspired by the love story of Ortiz and his wife, Dr. Julita Villacorta, who died January this year. He wrote a book of the couple’s story with the title, “Mar Lita – A story of faith, love and dignity,” and just finished writing it last year.

One of Ortiz’ sons, Edwin, who is the vice president for membership of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also shared the memories he had with his father, including the qualities he loved most about him.

“Dad is a very simple man; he is a great example of hard work, honesty and commitment to service. It gives us great honor when people say that he is a good example of a true leader and he’s much respected not just in the legal industry but also in the entire city,” he said.

“During the time he was active in politics, dad did not abuse his position but instead he took advantage of it to help people who needed work, people are eager to continue their studies,” Edwin added.

Ortiz served as mayor of Cebu City for three months – September to December 1963. Before that, he was acting vice mayor since August 1960 to September 1963 and city councilor from February 1960 to December 1961.

Ortiz will be laid to rest tomorrow at the Cebu Memorial Park Cemetery after the Mass at St. Therese Church. (FREEMAN)
