Sub-committee created for scholarship program

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Scholarship Committee created a sub-committee that will evaluate and accredit colleges and universities that will be allowed to join this year’s scholarship program of the city.

The City Government renews yearly the accreditation of schools where Cebu City scholars may enroll in order to avail of the scholarship.

Councilor Jose Daluz III who now heads the committee said that he gave the evaluation and accreditation sub committee until May 16 to accredit the schools.

There are 21 colleges and universities accredited last year.

Daluz said that they have to be able to post the name of schools accredited this year before May 16 when most schools start accepting new enrollees.

If one of the 21 schools does not qualify, Daluz said that the students who are already enrolled in the disqualified school will not be affected.

Daluz said there is a new school applying to join the scholarship program.

The evaluation and accreditation committee is headed by City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva.

Daluz said that the three major factors to look into by the committee is whether the schools have paid their taxes, whether the schools have adequate facilities and whether the quality of education provided by these schools meet the standards set by the Commission on Higher Education.

The schools that will pass the evaluation will be informed of the policy of the scholarship program particularly on the result of the psychometric test conducted among all high school graduates in Cebu City.

Daluz said the result of the psychometric test will tell who among the students will be allowed to enroll in two-year courses, vocational courses and four-year courses.

He said that the schools must know because if they accept students to enroll in four-year courses but the test said these students could not, the City will not pay the school for these students who did not follow the guidelines. — (FREEMAN)
