Byron hopeful dancing inmates can join Sinulog

-

“I am very hopeful, even hoping against hope,” said Capitol consultant on security matters Byron Garcia on the recent statement made by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña who is against letting inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center dance in the Sinulog mardi gras.

Since last Monday the inmates have already started practicing for a five-minute performance inside the Cebu City Sports Center.

But the mayor said that he will not allow the inmates to join the Sinulog “even if Michael Jackson joins them”.

The 1,500 CPDRC inmates, whose dance rendition of  Jackson’s all-time hit “Thriller” made them a global hit on YouTube, made it to No. 5 of Time Magazine’s 10 Most Watchable Internet Videos for 2007.

Garcia however said that only 100 inmates will be joining the Sinulog and one jail guard will be assigned to each one.

Garcia also added that of the 100 inmates, half of them are to be released on parole by February of next year.  All the inmates chosen to join the Sinulog were only sentenced from six months to two-year terms and majority have already started serving their sentences.

Convicted rapists, drug dealers, murderers and other criminals convicted of higher crimes were not chosen to perform.

“Ako-a na gisultihan sila nga dili mosugot ang mayor.  Pero hangyo sila to continue their practice kay sigi sila ampo ni Sto. Niño nga malamdagan ang huna-huna ni mayor.  Naglaum gyud sila,” Garcia said.  — Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon/BRP
