Scoliosis: "Early Detection, Early correction"

Justine Therese Juntilla - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Scoliosis Awareness Philippines (SAP) spearheaded the Cebu observance of International Scoliosis Awareness Day on June 28, 2014, at Parkmall in the North  Reclamation Area.

The day-long series of activities was intended to raise awareness as well as funds for scoliosis patients. It included talks by scoliosis specialists and the introduction of various devices used to support or correct a deformity from scoliosis - called orthoses - along with the latest technology for scoliosis scanning, and physical exercises advised for scoliosis patients.

True to the campaign slogan "Early detection, early correction," free scoliosis screening was also conducted. Moreover, as it is found out that many scoliosis patients get just little treatment or none at all, SAP announces efforts to help these patients for intervention and educate them as well regarding their ailment.

Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side. Common signs of scoliosis are uneven shoulders, the head being slightly off center, uneven waist and a visible curve at the back. The condition is idiopathic, meaning there are no known causes.

Statistics show that one in 40 people have scoliosis. The earlier ailment is detected, the lesser the cure needed. Indeed, early detection is important.
