CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Chemistry of the University of San Carlos encourages budding artistic pupils from both private and public schools to join a poster-making competition on February 21.

Ma. Ligaya S. Sulco, chair of the Department of Chemistry, and Dr. Janice Rabor, organizer, expressed that this is an "opportunity for children to showcase their artworks nationwide."

The USC Department of Chemistry, in partnership with the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies, is set to hold the "Children On-the-Spot Poster-Making Competition" from 8 am to noontime, with the theme: Health, Energy and Chemistry.

According to the organizers, the event aims to cultivate interest and appreciation in chemistry in the minds of the children. "This will also showcase children's view on the role of chemistry in the community, this is a nationwide event in cooperation with other universities in the country," Rabor said.

The event is open to all Grades IV to VII pupils, not older than 12 years old, from both private and public schools. A maximum of two pupils can be endorsed by each school. Registration is free and all materials to be used for the competition will be provided.

The three winning entries will join a pool of finalists at the national level. The first-place winner at the national level will receive the award during the 29th Philippine Chemistry Congress which will be held on April 9 to 11, 2014 at Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

Winning posters will also be exhibited during the Congress.

Only 50 contestants will be accepted to participate. Acceptance will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
