Missing V-League semis a learning experience for Tigresses

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – For the first time since joining the Shakey's V-League in 2004, the UST Tigresses will not reach the semifinals.

Parading a lineup composed mostly of reserves and Team B players, the Tigresses are still on the hunt for a win in the quarterfinals of the Season 13-Collegiate Conference.

But for head coach Emilio "Kung Fu" Reyes Jr., he is concerned more about exposure than history.

"Ito kami. Wala kaming dapat ikahiya. Ito yung nasa programa namin ngayon," Reyes said after his wards absorbed a 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 25-19 setback to San Sebastian at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City on Wednesday to crash out of the tournament.

"Hindi naman importante na nasa Final Four, ang mas importante yung experience na makukuha nila ditto," he added.

Even before the tournament began, Reyes made it clear that they will treat the conference as a "live tryout" to see who will make the Tigresses’ lineup in the UAAP.

Veterans Chloe Cortez, Rica Rivera and Alex Cabanos did not see action, while Ria Meneses, and the duo of EJ Laure and Cherry Rondina saw limited action because of their commitment with a professional team.

Reyes’ reinforcements came in the form of UST high school standouts Eya Laure and Maji Mangulabnan.

"No regrets at all. Sabi nga nila ‘coach nakaka-overwhelm.’ Dati sila daw naglalaro tapos ngayon sila na yung nasa loob," said Reyes.
